A recent study shows that brisk walking does just as much for your heart as an intense run, and two groups in the CSRA are teaming up to raise awareness about the importance of walking.
Geraldine Wilson with the Walk A Mile A Day Club says exercise should be enjoyable, "We're about walking, good health and fun."
The Walk a Mile a Day Club and Savannah River Nursing in Evans put on one of many one-mile fun walks in the area today.
Wilson organizes group events like these regionally because she says there is strength in numbers. "We are trying to promote walking and good health, that's what we are about and our little motto is walk a mile a day, throw the cigarettes away."
In this day and age, the word exercise might trigger weight loss in your mind, but Wilson says its more than about what the scale says.
"Weight is a dirty word for us. It's a lifestyle change, its about heart health. What a walk can do for your mind, helps with your stress, it should be a lifestyle change."
Heather Shelton with Savannah River Nursing says walking does much more than help you shed a few pounds, "The health benefits of walking are tremendous. It reduces stress, it also promotes sleep, and of course it gives you cardiac aerobics which everybody needs at this time."
